The Santoña, Vicoria and Joel Marshes Nature Reserve has an extension and is located in the eastern zone of the Cantabrian coast.
This estuary is home to a varied flora and fauna and this ecosystem is characerised because it is here where contiental waters from the rivers and streams mix with those from the sea and they provide a biological productivity that is comparable with tropical forest.
The conservation of the estuary is quite fundamental for the maintenance of sustained development in the area surorounding the wetlands and this is mainly generated by the revers Asón and Clarín.
